Multiple symmetric lipomatosis: a paradigm of metabolically innocent obesity? Response to Haap et al.

چکیده
E xcessive fat storage (obesity) is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (1). Paradoxically, inability to store fat (lipodystrophy) is also associated with insulin resistance (2). In both obesity and lipodystrophy, the adipocyte’s storage capacity is exceeded and lipids accumulate in liver, muscle, and -cells. Hypothetically, if adipose tissue had an intrinsic propensity to proliferate, rather than passively respond to energy excess, calories should be extracted from the circulation and the system should become (or remain) insulin sensitive. Such a process would be particularly effective if it occurred preferentially in subcutaneous adipose tissue, which, metabolically, is the least harmful site (3).

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis type 2 in females--report of two cases.
Two patients with features of multiple symmetric lipomatosis type 2 are presented. This particular disorder with a characteristic distribution of fat should be considered on differential diagnosis of obesity. Besides being rare, it may occasionally be unrecognized, especially in females. The etiology remains unknown; however, the association with high alcohol consumption is very strong. Several...

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is an extremely uncommon disorder. In the medical literatures about 200 cases have been reported. MSL is not associated with other generalized lipomatous disorders, nor are these patient to be necessarily obese. The cause of MSL is unknown. The disorder usually occurs in middle-aged males and there is frequently a history of alcoholism. Some instances of fam...
متن کاملMultiple Symmetric Lipomatosis: A Diagnostic Dilemma
Introduction. Multiple symmetric lipomatosis, or Madelung's disease, is a rare condition which is characterized with large symmetrical accumulation of noncapsulated fat tissue in upper arms, neck, and shoulder areas. The disease etiology is unknown, with the highest incidence in the Mediterranean region. Case Presentation. Here, we present the case of Madelung's disease with symmetric fat distr...

A rare case of multiple symmetric lipomatosis type 2 in a female patient was presented. New possible iconographic representations of multiple symmetric lipomatosis were considered and some metabolic aspects of this disease were reviewed.

Benign symmetrical lipomatosis (BSL), or Madelung's disease, is a rare disease characterized by the progressive growth of diffuse, painless, non-enveloped symmetric lipomas. The etiology of this disease remains unknown, although it was associated in the medical literature with alcohol and nicotine abuse, metabolic disorders and a number of malignancies. It is assumed that there is a genetic pre...
